St Gregory of Tours, tr. Dalton, 1927
Book 6, 28. Of Mark, the Referendary
The referendary Mark, of whom I have above spoken,1 after amassing much treasure through unjust ingathering of taxes, was suddenly seized with pains in the side, whereupon he shaved his head, and confessing his sins, gave up the ghost; his property was confiscated. They found in his house great store of gold and silver, and many things of price; but he himself carried away with him nothing but the harm of his own soul.
