Book 9, 36. How King Childebert Sent His Son Theudebert to Soissons
In the same year of his reign,1 Childebert was sojourning with his queen and his mother in the territory of the town named Strasbourg. And some of the more powerful citizens of Soissons and Meaux came to him, saying: ‘Give us one of thy sons that we may serve him; for if we have among us one of thy race as a pledge, we shall the better resist our enemies and defend the territory of thy city.’ The king rejoiced at this tidings, and prepared to send them his elder son Theudebert, to whom he assigned counts, domestics, mayors, tutors, and all the persons needful for the maintenance of royal state. In the sixth month2 he sent the prince, according to the desire of those who had asked for him; and the people received him with joy, and with prayers that the divine goodness might prolong his days and those of his sire.
