Book 1, 22. Of James the Apostle

When the apostle James had seen the Lord already dead upon the Cross, he is said to have vowed with an oath that he would not eat bread until he beheld the Lord risen again. And the Lord, coming again at last, upon the third day, after having triumphantly vanquished Hell, revealed Himself to James, saying: ‘Arise, James, and eat, for now am I risen from the dead.’ This was that James the Just, whom they call the brother of the Lord, because he was the son of Joseph by another wife than Mary.
