Book 1, Of the Gifts of the Magi, and of the Massacre of the Innocents

In the forty-fourth year of the reign of Augustus our Lord Jesus Christ, as I have related, was born, according to the flesh, of the Virgin Mary in Bethlehem, the city of David. The wise men, beholding His great star in the East, came with gifts and, making their offerings, humbly adored the Child. Herod, fearing for his kingdom, and striving to discover Christ our God, did to death the tender infants. But he himself was afterwards stricken by the divine judgement.
