Book 1, 14. Of the Division of the Kingdom of Israel

After the death of Solomon the kingdom was divided into two parts, by reason of the hardness of Roboam. Two tribes remained to Roboam, and received the name of Judah; Jeroboam had ten tribes, which were called Israel. Thereafter they fell away into idolatry, and were subdued neither by the predictions of the prophets nor by their death, nor by the disasters of the land, nor even by the ruin of their kings.
