Exhortation to Martyrdom

Origen, tr. O’Meara, 1954

Epilogue

These are my suggestions to you, made as best I could under the circumstances. I hope they may prove useful to you in the present combat. If, however, because now especially you are worthy to see more of the mysteries of God, you have a more profound and richer understanding, one more helpful to your present purpose, and so will disregard these my observations as being childish and trivial, I myself would wish for you that such be the case. For you the point is that your goal should be accomplished, not that it should be accomplished through me. My wish is that it be accomplished through the greater sublimity and fuller understanding, transcending all human nature, of God’s words and wisdom.1
