Mark the Deacon, tr. Hill, 1913

Chapter 32

But they of the idol-madness, the more they saw the Christians increasing in numbers, the more wroth did they become, and suffered them not to hold any civil office, but entreated them as naughty slaves. And the blessed Porphyry, seeing again the great wrong that was done to the Christians and enduring it not, beholding how despitefully they were entreated, departeth to Caesarea1 unto the blessed John, the archbishop, and beseecheth him with tears to let him go; for he said he could no longer bear the outrageous things that were done by the Gazaeans. But when the blessed John heard it he exhorted him to be of a stout heart and not to forsake the bishopric.
