St Basil the Great, tr. Lowther Clarke, 1925
Rule 52: The Apostle Says in One Place, “Let us not be vain-glorious; in another,“Not in…
I reckon that he is vain-glorious who does or says anything merely for the sake of worldly glory in the eyes of those who see or hear; and he is a men-pleaser who does anything to please a man and meet his wishes, even though what is done be disgraceful.3
Notes
- Gal. v. 26†.
- Eph. vi. 6 ἐν ὀφθαλμοδουλείᾳ for κατ’ ὀφθαλμοδουλείαν**.
- We gather that ἀνθρωπάρεσκος, a Biblical and ecclesiastical word, has come to have a bad sense, while κενόδοξος only implies folly.
