St Basil the Great, tr. Lowther Clarke, 1925

Rule 243: What Does the Apostle Mean by Saying, Be Ye Angry and Sin Not; Let Not the Sun…

I think the apostle has treated the subject here in imitation of the Lord. For just as the Lord said first in the Gospel: “There was said to them of old time”—this, and then adds: “But I say unto you “—this; so also here the apostle first recalls the old precept spoken to men of a former age: “Be ye angry and sin not,”3 and presently adds his own words which apply to us, saying: “Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, be put away from you.”4
