St Basil the Great, tr. Lowther Clarke, 1925
Chapter 3
That the first and great commandment in the law has been testified by the Lord to be this: to love God with all the heart; and the second, to love one’s neighbour as oneself.
Mt. xxii. 37-39 conflated with Mk. xii. 28-30.
That not to keep His commandments is a proof of not loving God and His Christ; but a proof of loving Him is the keeping of the commandments of Christ with endurance of His sufferings unto death. Jn. xiv. 21, 24; Jn. xv. 10; Rom. viii. 35-37.
