Akathist Hymn to the Theotokos
anonymous tr., 1919
d1
On the Fridays of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th weeks of the Great Fast (Lent) the small Apodeipnon (Little Compline) is read as far as to the end of “It is very meet . . .” (page 16). Then the Odes of the Canon “I shall open my mouth . . .” (page 22) are sung, and then “To thee, the Champion Leader . . .” (page 26). The Priest then reads the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th Stasis of the Akathist Hymn according to the week of the Fast. Then “To thee, the Champion Leader . . .” is repeated, and followed by the rest of Compline (page 58).
On Friday of the 5th week of the Great Fast the Akathist Hymn and the Little Compline are read straight through as arranged in this book.
It is to be noted that each stasis of the Hymn consists of six verses arranged in alphabetical order.
