St Adamnán of Iona, tr. Reeves, 1874

Book 1, 20. Of the Arrival of Another Guest Foretold by the Saint

Of the arrival of another Guest foretold by the Saint

So again at another time the saint spoke thus to his brethren on the third day of the week, “We intend to fast to-morrow, being Wednesday: and yet by the arrival of a certain troublesome guest the usual fast will be broken.” And so it happened as had been shown to the saint beforehand; for on the morning of that same Wednesday, another stranger was heard signalling across the Sound. This was Aidan, the son of Fergno, who, it is said, was minister for twelve years to Brendan Mocualti. He was a very religious man, and his arrival, as the saint had foretold, broke the fast of that day.
